Bob, great question. I get my pre-purchasing feedback via people who have purchased with Amazon.com as they have a great review section.
Secondly I always go with Leo Laporte “The Tech Guy” http://techguylabs.com/radio/pmwiki.php whose show airs nationally each week on Saturday and Sunday and can be downloaded via the net.
He says the Kodak Zi8 is the best in it’s category and price range.
