Hulu is a website that offers commercial-supported streaming video of TV shows and movies from NBC, Fox, ABC and many other networks and studios. Hulu videos are currently offered only to users in the United States. In order to ensure that no international users outside the U.S. have access to the video channel, Hulu has blocked many anonymous proxies and virtual private networks. Hulu provides video in Flash Video format, including many films and shows that are available in 360p and 480p. Hulu also provides web syndication services for other websites including AOL, MSN, MySpace, Facebook, Yahoo!, and Comcast’s fancast.com.
Hulu is a joint venture of NBC Universal (General Electric), Fox Entertainment Group (News Corp) and ABC Inc. (The Walt Disney Company), with funding by Providence Equity Partners, which made a US$100 million equity investment and received a 10% stake.
Hulu is online television viewing–and completely legal! Hooray! I won’t utilize a site if it’s illegal, so I was a bit hesitant initially when I found Hulu.com (through a link someone posted here on Askville, I believe). How could they have all these brand new shows on here, and not charge anything? What’s up with that?? It has lots and lots (over 900) of great current shows, and also full length movies that download and play instantly–all for FREE!!
How do they do this, you ask? Good question! Hulu is owned by the television networks NBC Universal and News Corp! Shows come from FOX, NBC Universal, MGM, Sony Pictures Television, Warner Bros. and more. It’s like having a video rental on your computer–only with no rental fees! Anytime, day or night–no set schedule to watch them.
